Philoptochos
"On the street I saw a small girl cold and shivering in a thin dress, with little hope of a decent meal.

I became angry and said to God: Why did you permit this? Why don't you do something about it?

For a while God said nothing. That night he replied quite suddenly: I certainly did something about it - I MADE YOU"
Philoptochos meets on the first Monday of every month (September through June) at 6:30 PM. Meetings normally last less than 2 hours.

WHAT IS PHILOPTOCHOS?
The word Philoptochos means "friend of the poor."

Philoptochos is the philanthropic and charitable organization of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese whose goal is to help the poor, the destitute, the hungry, the elderly, the sick, the unemployed, the orphaned, the imprisoned, the widowed, the disabled and victims of disaster around the world.

As members of Philoptochos, it is our mission to perpetuate and promote the Greek Orthodox faith and traditions in conformity with the doctrines, canons, discipline, customs and divine worship.

The sacred mission is to help at all levels of the church community in cooperation with the parish priest for the welfare of the community and the Orthodox Church.

The role of Philoptochos is to support the Christian idea of marriage and upbringing of children and to preserve the sacredness of the Orthodox family through family concern, service, and unity of action.

While Philoptochos is often thought of as a women's organization, men are also welcome to join.

For more information about Philoptochos at St. Demetrios, contact any of the officers (Stephanie Simpson, Darlene Sinclair, Sussan Kotsos, Laurie Mitsanas) or members.
